Trieste Airport is set to welcome a new airline and a direct route to the Netherlands in a significant expansion of its services. Transavia, a budget airline owned by the Air France-KLM Group, announced that it will launch its first-ever direct flights from the northeastern Italian region of Friuli Venezia Giulia to Rotterdam in April 2025.

The service will mark the first direct connection between the two destinations, a move that both tourism officials and business leaders say could have a transformative impact on the region. Beginning April 1, 2025, the low-cost carrier will operate three flights a week between Trieste and Rotterdam. The flights are scheduled for Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, with the third Saturday flight shifting to Sunday during the peak summer months of July and August to better accommodate vacationers.

“This is an important announcement that broadens the possibilities for development, both for incoming tourism to our region and for outgoing travel to the futuristic city of Rotterdam,” said Marco Consalvo, CEO of Trieste Airport. Rotterdam, the second-largest city in the Netherlands and home to the busiest port in Europe, is less than an hour’s drive from Amsterdam.

Trieste, known for its historic architecture and its position at the crossroads of Central European and Mediterranean cultures, has been eager to attract new international connections. The arrival of Transavia makes the airline the fifth carrier to establish scheduled routes at Trieste Airport, further enhancing the city’s profile as a travel hub.

For Rotterdam, the new route is expected to bring increased business and leisure travelers to its rapidly growing port and urban centers. “The airport is located near the port of Rotterdam, the largest in Europe, which is a key hub for maritime trade in the Netherlands. This offers an additional opportunity to support the industrial activities in our region,” Consalvo added.

As part of the Air France-KLM family, Transavia operates as a low-cost carrier with a strong presence across Europe. The airline is known for its budget-friendly services and will be offering tickets for the Trieste-Rotterdam route starting October 16 via its website and mobile app.

The new connection signals an important step for Trieste Airport as it continues to expand its international reach, catering to both business and leisure travelers. For residents of Friuli Venezia Giulia, it offers a new gateway to Northern Europe, while for Rotterdam, it represents a strategic new link to the heart of the Mediterranean.

With both cities poised to benefit from increased economic and tourism ties, the introduction of this direct route marks a win-win for two regions looking to strengthen their global connectivity.
