A minor earthquake, registering a magnitude of 2.6, struck in the vicinity of Grahovo ob Baci in Slovenia on Sunday evening, just 16 kilometers from the border with Friuli Venezia Giulia region. According to officials from the Civil Protection Agency of Friuli Venezia Giulia, the tremor occurred at approximately 6:19 p.m. local time at a depth of 20 kilometers.
While no significant damage or injuries were immediately reported, residents across the border in northeastern Italy reported feeling light shaking. Friuli Venezia Giulia, a region known for its rich history and proximity to the seismically active Balkans, has experienced occasional earthquakes over the years, though most tend to be relatively minor.
Authorities remain on alert, monitoring the area for potential aftershocks. In the meantime, the region’s Civil Protection agency has urged residents to remain calm but vigilant.
The area, situated near the junction of the Adriatic Sea and the Balkans, has long been subject to tectonic shifts, though larger and more destructive events are rare. The latest tremor is a reminder of the seismic sensitivity in this part of southern Europe.
