The Municipality of Trieste has announced that its civic museums will switch to winter hours beginning Monday, October 14. Visitors will be able to experience a range of historical, artistic, and scientific exhibits, though some locations will undergo temporary changes due to planned renovations.

Among the museums adjusting their schedules is the Civico Museo Revoltella, one of Trieste’s most prominent cultural landmarks. Open daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., with closure on Tuesdays, the museum’s operation will be scaled back as it embarks on significant renovations. These upgrades, funded in part by the national Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), are aimed at removing both physical and cognitive barriers to make the museum more accessible. For the duration of the work, only the baronial residence section of the museum will remain open.

Other prominent museums affected by the new winter schedule include the Civico Museo d’Antichità J. J. Winckelmann, home to an extensive collection of ancient art and artifacts, which will welcome visitors from Tuesday to Sunday between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Civico Museo Sartorio, renowned for its eclectic exhibits spanning centuries of art and history, will now be open from Thursday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Civico Museo Teatrale “Carlo Schmidl”, dedicated to the rich history of theater in Trieste, will open on the same schedule as the Museo Winckelmann, while the Civico Museo della Risiera di San Sabba, a sobering memorial to those who suffered during World War II, will be accessible every day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Science enthusiasts will have their share of exhibits as well. The Civico Museo di Storia Naturale, known for its extensive natural history collection, will open its doors five days a week, with extended hours on Wednesdays. The Civico Museo del Mare – Lloyd Section, located in the Old Port, will also adjust to winter hours, running Thursday through Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

However, not all museums will be fully accessible this season. The Civico Orto Botanico will close for the winter, and a handful of other museums, including the Civico Museo Morpurgo and the Civico Museo di Storia Patria, remain closed for planned renovations and reorganization.

While visitors may encounter temporary limitations, the city’s commitment to enhancing its museums for a broader, more inclusive audience reflects the ever-evolving cultural landscape of Trieste. Whether wandering the galleries of the Museo Revoltella or reflecting at the Risiera di San Sabba, those who visit this fall and winter will find a city firmly rooted in its history yet looking boldly to the future.

For Trieste’s civic museums, the shift to winter hours is both a reminder of the city’s cultural riches and an invitation to explore these treasures anew, even as colder days settle in.
