Travelers on Italy’s vital Venice-Trieste rail corridor should prepare for significant disruptions over the next several weeks, as planned maintenance work will alter schedules and routes for several major train services, the Italian railway network announced on Wednesday.
The maintenance, scheduled by Rete Ferroviaria Italiana, will affect services on multiple weekends, starting Saturday, October 26, and continuing on November 9, 16, 23, and December 14, 2024. The work will occur between the Monfalcone and Portogruaro stations, two critical points on the line linking Venice and Trieste, both key hubs in northeastern Italy.
Changes to Major Services
The disruptions will impact some of Italy’s most prominent long-distance trains, including the high-speed Frecciarossa services. Trains running the Rome-Venice-Trieste and Turin/Milan-Venice-Trieste routes will see changes, with some being rerouted between Venice Mestre and Trieste Centrale. Stops at intermediate stations—Monfalcone, Trieste Airport, Cervignano, and Latisana—will be canceled, resulting in increased travel times.
Intercity trains, another popular option for longer journeys, are also affected. Services connecting Rome and Trieste will undergo both schedule and route adjustments. Notably, these trains will not run between Venice Mestre and Monfalcone on the designated days. Train IC 592, scheduled for November 9, will operate under a new number: 89618.
Replacement Bus Services and Recommendations
To maintain service continuity, regional authorities are organizing replacement bus routes between Monfalcone, Portogruaro, and Trieste Centrale. However, the bus services, expected to have longer travel times due to potential traffic congestion, will offer fewer seats than regular train services. Travelers are advised to plan accordingly and, if possible, reschedule their journeys.
In a further inconvenience for some passengers, bicycles and animals—except guide dogs—will not be permitted on the buses.
Travel Updates and Assistance
Trenitalia, Italy’s national train operator, has updated its booking systems with the new schedules and service changes. Passengers can access real-time information through the Trenitalia website, its mobile app, and via a toll-free customer service number (800 89 20 21). Information is also available at ticket offices, self-service machines, and assistance desks in stations.
Trenitalia has also activated its “smart caring” service, providing personalized updates to booked passengers via SMS and email, to keep travelers informed of the latest changes.
With these disruptions expected to affect thousands of commuters and tourists over the coming weeks, the Italian railway network is urging passengers to stay informed and plan ahead to avoid unnecessary delays.
