As Trieste prepares to commemorate the 70th anniversary of its return to Italy, the city will host a series of institutional events on Saturday, October 26, centered in the iconic Piazza dell’Unità d’Italia. Local authorities have announced temporary traffic restrictions as part of the celebrations.

The Municipality of Trieste, in an effort to accommodate the events, has issued Traffic Ordinance No. 1100-2024. The ordinance outlines a one-hour vehicular ban along key sections of the city’s waterfront, from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday. The restricted area will span Riva Del Mandracchio, Riva Caduti Per l’Italianità, and Riva Tre Novembre, encompassing the stretch between Via Di Mercato Vecchio and Piazza Nicolò Tommaseo.

City officials have made exceptions for emergency service vehicles, law enforcement, and authorized vehicles, ensuring the smooth operation of essential services during the event.

The anniversary marks a significant chapter in Trieste’s history. After the Second World War, the city found itself in geopolitical limbo, with Allied forces administering it for nearly a decade. It wasn’t until October 26, 1954, that Trieste was formally returned to Italian sovereignty, an event still celebrated as a symbol of national unity.

The waterfront restrictions, though brief, highlight the importance of this anniversary in Trieste’s civic life, with many locals and visitors expected to participate in the day’s commemorative activities. The events in Piazza dell’Unità d’Italia are likely to draw large crowds, underscoring the enduring significance of Trieste’s return to Italy in the collective memory of its people.

Traffic Impact

Authorities urge motorists to plan their travel accordingly, as the restricted areas are among the busiest thoroughfares in the city. Traffic flow will resume at 5:00 p.m., but the public is advised to expect delays in and around the waterfront during the celebration.

Local organizers are working to ensure that the commemorative events run smoothly, with provisions in place to minimize disruption. Public transportation will also be adjusted to accommodate the restrictions.

As Trieste honors its past, the celebration will not only serve as a reminder of the city’s unique history but also as a testament to the resilience and unity of its people.
