As autumn leaves fall and the harvest season comes to a close, the charming village of Prosecco prepares for its annual celebration of San Martino, the region’s patron saint. The festivities, which run from November 4 to November 11, promise a blend of cultural traditions, local agricultural pride, and community spirit.

At a press conference held on Wednesday, Deputy Mayor Serena Tonel unveiled the details of the festival, expressing gratitude to key partners including the I Circoscrizione Altipiano Ovest, the Farmers’ Association – Kmečka zveza, and the Miramare Protected Marine Area. “During the San Martino period, the new oil is ready, and farmers reflect on the harvest while giving thanks for the season just past,” Tonel remarked. “This festival is not only a vital social occasion for our local community but also an important opportunity to showcase our region’s agri-food excellence to visitors from Friuli Venezia Giulia and beyond.”

While Trieste’s agricultural landscape may be modest in size, its quality is renowned. “We stand by our producers, who are enhancing the unique offerings of the Karst region, characterized by its proximity to the sea and distinct microclimatic conditions,” Tonel continued.

The festivities kick off on Monday, November 4, and culminate with a vibrant celebration on Monday, November 11, coinciding with the feast day of San Martino. From November 1, the Autumn Funfair will bring an air of festivity to the area, drawing both locals and tourists alike.

A week filled with cultural initiatives awaits attendees, including the exhibition “Stories of the Biosphere,” curated by the WWF and supported by the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region. On Saturday, November 9, festival-goers can enjoy a free nature walk through the Biosphere Reserve, followed by a tasting of Prosekar sparkling wine and an evening concert featuring surprise performers.

The celebration reaches a peak on Sunday, November 10, with the “Furenga di San Martino,” a traditional event showcasing the transport of new wine via horse-drawn cart. This is followed by the ceremonial Baptism of the new wine, enhanced by the sounds of traditional music.

On the final day of festivities, November 11, the village will be alive with the San Martino municipal fair and the agricultural market “Sapori di San Martino,” where local artisans and producers will showcase their finest products. The event not only celebrates the region’s rich agricultural heritage but also reinforces the sense of community that defines Prosecco.

As the village gears up for another vibrant celebration, the spirit of San Martino continues to thrive, uniting the community in a festive tribute to its agricultural roots and local traditions.
