The Immaginario Scientifico in Trieste will transform into a hub of visionary urban design on Sunday, November 3, with a workshop that invites young and old alike to create a prototype of a city from the future. The event, part of the Trieste Science+Fiction Festival, will blend imagination with cutting-edge science, offering a hands-on exploration of what a “city of science fiction” could look like.
For fans of the genre and budding city planners, this event promises an immersive experience. The concept is simple yet grand: visitors are encouraged to bring their dreams of futuristic living to life by contributing a unique section to the collective “City of Science Fiction.” Using an array of tools and materials provided by the museum, participants are invited to imagine and build futuristic infrastructure—from skyscrapers to spaceports—in two sessions held at 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. within the museum’s Officina, the designated creative workshop space.
This playful, creative event sits at the intersection of science and imagination. According to organizers, the workshop will explore how future cities could better reflect human needs, technological advancements, and environmental sustainability. A perfect blend of education and entertainment, the lab will be accessible to all ages, with organizers especially encouraging children ages nine and up to take part.
“The workshop lets participants bring their dreams into the real world,” said a representative of Immaginario Scientifico. “It’s about more than building; it’s about envisioning a world where creativity and innovation thrive side by side.”
In keeping with the November holiday weekend, the Immaginario Scientifico will extend its hours, opening its doors from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The event is included in the museum’s general admission, and no reservations are required—a move meant to encourage spontaneous participation among festival-goers and locals alike.
Trieste, often heralded as Italy’s “city of science,” has a storied tradition in science and technology, with renowned research centers and cultural institutions contributing to its unique landscape. This weekend’s workshop is not only a testament to the city’s commitment to scientific inquiry but also a reminder of the power of imagination in driving future possibilities.
