In a vibrant celebration of knowledge and culture, the City of Trieste will host a series of engaging lectures titled “Lessons in History” and “Lessons in Science” at the historic Teatro Verdi, beginning November 17, 2024, and continuing through March 30, 2025. This initiative, organized by Editori Laterza and supported by the Fondazione CrTrieste, aims to foster a deeper understanding of both historical and scientific developments while ensuring free access to all attendees.

At a press conference held on October 31, 2024, Councillor for Culture and Tourism Giorgio Rossi emphasized the importance of these lectures in providing valuable historical references amidst a world of uncertainties. “Knowing history is fundamental,” he remarked, expressing gratitude to the Fondazione CrTrieste for their patronage, as well as to local media and Teatro Verdi for their collaborative efforts.

The “Lessons in History” series, themed “The War of the Sexes,” will explore the complexities of gender dynamics through six compelling lectures. Kicking off the series on November 17, Francesca Cenerini will delve into the life of Messalina, the notorious wife of Emperor Claudius, examining the myths that have shaped her legacy. Subsequent speakers will include Maria Giuseppina Muzzarelli, who will highlight the fierce determination of Chiara d’Assisi on December 1, and Lisa Roscioni, who will share the tumultuous story of Marianna de Leyva, the infamous Monaca di Monza, on January 19, 2025.

As the series unfolds, attendees can anticipate discussions on literary figures like Madame Bovary, explored by Alberto Mario Banti on January 26, as well as the polarizing legacy of Eva Perón, presented by Loris Zanatta on February 2. The series will conclude on February 23 with Costantino D’Orazio examining the life and artistry of Frida Kahlo, a revolutionary figure in both art and feminist discourse.

In conjunction with the history lectures, the “Lessons in Science” series will debut with a focus on notable scientific figures, showcasing how individual contributions have shaped our understanding of the world. Kicking off on March 2, 2025, Piero Martin will illuminate the life of Albert Einstein, a scientist whose revolutionary ideas transcended physics to engage with broader social issues. Following him, Telmo Pievani will reflect on Charles Darwin’s groundbreaking theories on March 23, while Guido Barbujani will wrap up the series on March 30, exploring the crucial work of biochemist Rosalind Franklin in uncovering the structure of DNA.

Each lecture promises not only to inform but also to provoke thought and discussion, highlighting the interconnectedness of history and science. The lessons will be introduced by journalists from “Il Piccolo,” ensuring a robust dialogue around each topic.

Entry to these events is free, but advance booking is recommended via the Teatro Verdi website due to expected high demand. This initiative not only serves as an enriching educational opportunity for the local community but also positions Trieste as a hub for cultural and intellectual discourse this winter.
