On November 13, 2024, the “U. Veruda” Hall at Palazzo Costanzi, a short stroll from Trieste’s bustling Piazza dell’Unità d’Italia, will host the opening of a unique astronomical photography exhibition titled Glimpses into the Darkness of Light-Years – Astronomical Photography Between Science and Art. This exceptional showcase, organized by the Antares Trieste Astronomical Studies Center, is set to captivate visitors with a stunning collection of astronomical images that blend scientific precision with artistic beauty.

Running from November 14 to 27, 2024, the exhibition is free to the public and will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. With its blend of cutting-edge science and artistic creativity, the event promises to appeal not only to astronomy enthusiasts but also to the general public, including students and individuals with disabilities. Guided tours will be available for school groups and visitors of all ages.

The exhibition features large-format photographs of celestial wonders, ranging from sky-scapes and star systems to nebulae and distant galaxies. These breathtaking images, captured by members of the Antares Trieste Astronomical Studies Center, reflect both the immense scale of the universe and the latest advancements in astrophotography. Some of the photographs were taken from Trieste itself, while others come from remote areas far removed from the light pollution that often obscures our view of the night sky.

Among the featured astrophotographers are both professional and amateur astronomers whose work has garnered international recognition. The collection highlights the rapid evolution of astronomical photography, especially in the last decade, when advances in technology have made it possible to capture details once visible only through the largest and most powerful telescopes. These images are not just beautiful—they are also scientifically significant, offering new insights into the structures and phenomena of the cosmos.

The exhibition is not only a visual feast but also an educational experience. Descriptive panels will provide visitors with the opportunity to learn about the photographed objects and their locations in the sky, as well as the techniques used to capture the images. One of the exhibition’s key goals is to raise awareness of the growing problem of light pollution and its impact on astronomical observation. Visitors will also have the chance to explore some of the equipment used to create the photographs, including a planetarium that will offer a simulated view of the celestial sphere.

The event is organized in collaboration with the Municipality of Trieste’s Department of Culture and Tourism, and is made possible with contributions from ZKB – Gruppo CassaCentrale and Coop – Alleanza 3.0. It is also supported by the Unione Astrofili Italiani and features photographic prints from the local “Foto Mauro” shop.

Glimpses into the Darkness of Light-Years stands as a celebration of both the beauty and the complexity of the universe, offering a rare opportunity for the public to witness the convergence of art and science through the lens of the stars. With its blend of cutting-edge technology, stunning visuals, and educational content, this exhibition is sure to leave a lasting impression on all who visit.
