As the city gears up for the beloved San Nicolò Municipal Fair, now in its 101st year, local authorities have announced a series of temporary traffic measures to accommodate the bustling event. The fair, a hallmark of Trieste’s holiday season, will take place along Viale XX Settembre, Largo Don Francesco Bonifacio, and Via Giusto Muratti, drawing thousands of visitors to its festive stalls and activities.
The Municipality of Trieste has issued an ordinance outlining specific parking bans, traffic diversions, and exemptions to ensure a smooth setup and operation of the event, which runs from November 30 through December 8, 2024. Preparatory work begins as early as November 24.
Parking Restrictions and Transit Exemptions
Starting at midnight on Sunday, November 24, no parking or stopping will be permitted in key areas near the fairgrounds, including sections of Via Cesare Battisti and Via Giuseppe Lorenzo Gatteri. These restrictions will remain in place during the setup and dismantling phases of the event, which extend through December 11.
While these restrictions aim to alleviate congestion, exemptions will be granted to vehicles involved in setting up and dismantling the iconic market stalls and gazebos that line the streets of the pedestrian-friendly Viale XX Settembre. Additionally, certain zones within the city’s Limited Traffic Zone (Z.T.L.) will allow restricted access for fair-related vehicles.
During the fair’s operational days, from November 30 to December 8, expanded parking bans will apply to areas such as Via Ugo Polonio, Via Giosuè Carducci, and Passo Fausto Pecorari. The city will also prohibit vehicle access to segments of Viale XX Settembre, prioritizing pedestrian safety and ensuring an uninterrupted festive experience.
Accommodating the Fair’s Needs
The ordinance accounts for the logistical complexities of the event, providing daily access exemptions for fair operators to replenish supplies and for municipal services like street cleaning. Emergency vehicles will also maintain access, ensuring public safety.
Trieste’s municipal government has emphasized the importance of these measures, not only to safeguard the fair’s operations but also to maintain the city’s day-to-day functionality during one of its busiest seasons.
A Century-Old Tradition
The San Nicolò Municipal Fair has been a cherished tradition since its inception over a century ago, offering locals and tourists alike a chance to explore artisanal crafts, seasonal foods, and holiday gifts. Held against the historic backdrop of Viale XX Settembre, the fair is a reflection of Trieste’s vibrant cultural heritage and its ability to blend history with modern festivities.
City officials are urging residents and visitors to plan ahead and familiarize themselves with the temporary regulations. “We appreciate the cooperation of the public as we make this beloved event as seamless as possible for everyone involved,” said a municipal spokesperson.
For more information, the Municipality of Trieste has published detailed maps and schedules of the traffic measures on its official website.
As the city prepares to celebrate the spirit of San Nicolò, Trieste once again demonstrates its ability to adapt and shine during the festive season.
