With the holiday season fast approaching, the city of Trieste has unveiled its ambitious Christmas 2024 program, promising an enchanting blend of tradition, innovation, and community. The announcement was made on Monday during a press conference at the historic Palazzo Gopcevich.
This year marks a significant milestone as Trieste’s festive decorations, including streetlights and Christmas trees, are being managed under a public-private partnership with Edison Next Government as part of a broader public lighting project.
Holiday Highlights
The event lineup, titled “A Trieste per le Feste” (In Trieste for the Holidays), features citywide illuminations, cultural promotions, and entertainment for all ages. Key events include:
- Inauguration Ceremony (Nov. 29): The festive lights will be officially switched on in Piazza Unità d’Italia following a performance by the Adriatic Choir and Christmas carolers.
- Mesmerizing Decorations: Over 27 kilometers of lights and nearly 100 Christmas trees will adorn both the city center and its neighborhoods. Highlights include a 15-meter-long star in Piazza Unità and a “Sword of Light” installation at San Giusto Castle.
- Musical Performances: From classic carols by the Christmas Carol ensemble to modern tunes by the youth choir Giovane InCanto, December weekends will feature live music across the city.
- Cultural Offerings: The city is launching “Gift Yourself a Year of Museums” — a discounted annual pass to Trieste’s civic museums, encouraging residents to embrace local culture.
A Community-Centered Celebration
“This holiday season reflects Trieste’s vibrant spirit and its commitment to fostering joy, reflection, and togetherness,” said Giorgio Rossi, Councillor for Culture and Tourism. Rossi emphasized the city’s progress in 2024, including increased tourism, three-quarters of which came from international visitors.
Everest Bertoli, Councillor for Financial Policies, highlighted the importance of public investment in the festivities, calling Christmas “a magical moment” that benefits both the community’s morale and the local economy.
What’s New in 2024?
The program introduces unique experiences for children, including whimsical bubble performances by Bubble on Circus, culminating in a “bubble snowfall” in Piazza Unità. Visitors can also enjoy biographical plays about local figures like Lionello Stock, staged in historic city museums.
Looking Ahead
Trieste’s leadership is optimistic about building on this year’s festivities, aiming for an even grander celebration in 2025. As the city lights up this Friday, locals and visitors alike are invited to bask in its festive glow.
