The holiday season began in earnest on Friday night as Trieste’s beloved Piazza Unità d’Italia was illuminated in a dazzling display of Christmas lights. Residents and visitors gathered in the square to witness the transformation, which included 24 illuminated fir trees, a 15-meter-long comet star, and the return of the “Sword of Light” installation at San Giusto Castle.

This year’s decorations span over 12,500 meters of lights in the city center, with an additional 14,500 meters adorning nearly 100 fir trees throughout neighborhoods and Karst villages. The festive atmosphere is further enhanced by the inclusion of installations like the glimmering Christmas Sphere in Piazza Verdi and a serene light display in Piazza Hortis.

One of the highlights is the “Sword of Light,” a 7-kilometer-long installation that aligns with the mythical “Michael’s line,” connecting sacred sites from Ireland to the Holy Land. Originally created for the Sacra di San Michele in Val di Susa, it has become a unique symbol of Trieste’s blend of history and creativity.

The decorations will remain through late January to include Orthodox Christmas and Epiphany, emphasizing Trieste’s commitment to cultural inclusivity.

In addition to the festive displays, we spoke with city dwellers about their hopes for the season. Many expressed excitement about the lights and the sense of unity they bring to Trieste. Others shared hopes for a bustling holiday season filled with tourists and events that highlight the city’s charm. “It’s a time to come together and celebrate what makes our community special,” said one resident.

With a mix of dazzling lights, thoughtful inclusivity, and a deep sense of tradition, Trieste is poised for a Christmas season to remember.
