Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Matteo Salvini visited Trieste on Wednesday as part of the national L’Italia dei sì (Italy of Yes) initiative, outlining ambitious infrastructure plans for the Friuli Venezia Giulia region. From modernizing railways to advancing port development, Salvini’s message was clear: Italy is investing in its future.
Speaking at the city’s historic Stazione Marittima, Salvini detailed projects intended to enhance regional and national connectivity. These include the Udine rail hub and the Gorizia rail link, representing over five billion euros in combined investments. “This is about building a stronger Italy,” Salvini said, underscoring the importance of upgrading transport networks to bolster economic growth.
Port Leadership in the Spotlight
The visit comes at a critical time for Trieste’s port, a vital economic driver for the region. Salvini announced that a decision on the leadership of eight national port authorities, including Trieste’s, is expected by the end of December as several presidents’ terms near expiration.
Trieste’s port has long been considered a gateway to Central Europe, and its future leadership will play a pivotal role in shaping Italy’s trade and logistics strategy.
A Vision for Trieste and Beyond
Salvini’s remarks extended beyond infrastructure. He championed the redevelopment of Trieste’s historic Porto Vecchio (Old Port), a sprawling waterfront area slated for cultural and commercial revitalization. Regional President Massimiliano Fedriga echoed this vision, urging institutions to accelerate progress.
“Delays are no longer acceptable,” Fedriga said, alluding to bureaucratic hurdles that have slowed the redevelopment process. Salvini, in a pointed comment, quipped, “Any reference to heritage agencies is purely coincidental.”
Local Leadership Applauds
Trieste’s mayor, Roberto Dipiazza, welcomed Salvini’s visit and praised the government’s commitment to the city. “This is a moment of opportunity for Trieste,” Dipiazza said, highlighting the significance of planned investments.
Italy’s Infrastructure Renaissance
Salvini’s visit is part of a broader campaign to showcase Italy’s infrastructure renaissance. From roads to railways, airports to ports, the government is framing these projects as critical to the country’s economic recovery and global competitiveness.
In Trieste, a city that has long balanced its historical identity with modern aspirations, Salvini’s promises struck a chord. Whether these ambitious plans will meet their tight deadlines remains to be seen, but for now, Trieste stands as a symbol of Italy’s determination to move forward.
