The seventh edition of the International Chess Tournament “Starhotels Savoia” will be held from January 4 to 6, 2025, at the “Sala Tergeste” in the Starhotels Savoia Excelsior Palace in Trieste. The event was officially announced at a press conference on December 3, 2024, hosted by Elisa Lodi, the City of Trieste’s Sports Councillor, alongside Massimo Varini, President of the Accademia di Scacchi Trieste, and other key local officials.
The tournament will feature top players from around the world, including Italy, Serbia, Croatia, Austria, and Slovenia. The competition is divided into two categories: Tournament A, “Trofeo Hotel Savoia” for players with an Elo rating over 1800, and Tournament B, “Memorial Rozmann,” for players with an Elo rating below 1799. The event, with a prize pool of €1,500, is also seen as a significant opportunity for Trieste to showcase its long chess tradition and vibrant international community.
Trieste’s geographical location at the center of Europe’s chess world provides a fitting backdrop for the tournament. The city’s history with chess dates back to 1923, when it hosted the Chess Congress, and in 1997, it revived its international chess legacy with the first edition of this tournament. Over the years, the event has attracted players from Russia, Serbia, Slovenia, and beyond, solidifying its international prestige.
The tournament is organized by the Accademia di Scacchi Trieste, which has been pivotal in promoting chess in the region. Founded in 2008 by Massimo Varini, the academy has become a hub for chess enthusiasts of all levels and has helped nurture a new generation of chess talent. The event will also offer online registration and hotel packages for participants.
The final round will be held on January 6, 2025, with awards presented in various categories, including senior, female, and junior players.
