The storied mountaineering history of Trieste comes to life in “Towards the Summits: Mountaineering in Trieste,” a new exhibition opening today at the Bastione Fiorito of Castello di San Giusto. Running through June 8, 2025, the exhibit explores the city’s deep connection to climbing through the lives and achievements of legendary figures, including Julius Kugy, Emilio Comici, and Tiziana Weiss.
Curated by Anna Krekic and mountaineer Flavio Ghio, the exhibition highlights Trieste’s pivotal role in Italian mountaineering, from its Austro-Hungarian roots to its post-war transformations. A special focus is placed on the 70th anniversary of Italy’s historic ascent of K2, featuring contributions by Trieste-born geodesist Antonio Marussi.
“This is more than a celebration of climbing; it’s a reflection of Trieste’s cultural and historical identity,” said Giorgio Rossi, the city’s Councillor for Culture and Tourism, at the exhibition’s launch.
The exhibit spans decades of climbing achievements, blending art, literature, and historical artifacts. Key displays include rare equipment, paintings, and personal items from mountaineering icons. Women climbers, who broke barriers in the sport, also receive overdue recognition.
Housed in a revitalized space within the castle, the exhibition aligns with Trieste’s growing reputation as a cultural hub. It is open Tuesday to Sunday through March 31, with extended hours beginning in April. For details, visit castellodisangiustotrieste.it.
