In a heartwarming celebration of National Tree Day, the Municipality of Trieste commemorated the occasion with the planting of two cherry trees in the lush Garden of Piazzale Rosmini. The ceremony, held on December 4, was attended by a mix of local officials, educators, and young students, all coming together to honor the tradition of greening the city and fostering environmental awareness.

Michele Babuder, the Councillor for Territorial Policies, was on hand to lead the event, alongside staff and students from the Primi Voli Kindergarten. The ceremony also saw the collaboration of the Fourth Administrative District Città Nuova – Barriera Nuova – San Vito – Città Vecchia, with the Environment and Green Service of the Municipality of Trieste coordinating the planting.

The two cherry trees were gifted by the Municipal Administration to the newborns of the district. Every year, the city’s Environment and Green Service extends this unique gesture, gifting two trees to each of the seven administrative districts in honor of their respective newborns. This initiative is part of a broader effort to integrate environmental consciousness into the community’s daily life.

“This tradition is about more than just planting trees,” Babuder said in his remarks during the ceremony. “It’s about connecting our children to the environment and investing in their future. These trees are a living legacy for Trieste’s young generation.”

In addition to the new plantings in Piazzale Rosmini, similar initiatives have taken place across the city. Trees have already been planted in various locations, including the gardens of Borgo San Nazario, Piazza Volontari Giuliani, the public parking areas on Via Pagano, and the Basevi Garden in Via San Giacomo in Monte. Future plantings are scheduled for the Pinko Tomažič Primary School in Trebiciano and the Filzi Grego Primary School on Strada di Guardiella.

Perhaps the most moving event took place in collaboration with the Montessori School on Via Monte San Gabriele. There, children participated in the planting of 600 oak trees at the Villa Giulia Municipal Park, an act that underscored the city’s commitment to cultivating environmental stewardship from a young age.

Babuder emphasized the importance of involving schools in these initiatives, noting that educating young people about environmental conservation is crucial to ensuring the city’s green future. “The children represent our most precious present,” he said. “Raising awareness and involving them in projects like these is not just about preserving our city’s beauty, but investing in the future of the environment.”

For those interested in participating, the Municipality of Trieste offers a range of free educational projects throughout the year. Information about these initiatives can be found on the City’s Civic Network, under the Education section.

Through these actions, Trieste is reinforcing its commitment to sustainability, planting not just trees but seeds for a greener tomorrow.
