The Friuli Venezia Giulia region is preparing to launch a new cross-border maritime service connecting Trieste with several key destinations in Slovenia and Croatia, starting in June 2025. The service, expected to run for three years with an option for extension, is part of a broader effort to enhance regional connectivity and tourism.
Cristina Amirante, the regional councillor for Infrastructure and Territory, announced the initiative, emphasizing the importance of improving the region’s maritime offerings to meet the growing demands of both tourists and residents. “We aim to ensure high-level maritime connections that not only make our region more accessible but also boost its attractiveness and economic potential,” she said. “This service is critical for both local residents and visitors who rely on efficient transportation to navigate between Italy, Slovenia, and Croatia.”
The service, which will operate from Trieste to Piran in Slovenia, and Poreč, Rovinj, and Mali Lošinj in Croatia, is scheduled to begin on June 26, 2025, with two weekly departures to each destination. The contract, which carries an estimated value of 4.5 million euros over three years, will offer travel options between the summer seasons of 2025 and 2027, with a possible extension for 2028.
The tender, which is being managed digitally via the eAppalti FVG platform, invites bidders to submit proposals by February 4, 2025. The region is seeking passenger vessels with specific minimum requirements, including capacity, speed, and bike spaces. Criteria for the “improved technical offer” also include the age of the vessel and the ability to extend the service period.
Maritime transport, a vital part of the region’s infrastructure, is seen as a key driver of tourism and local satisfaction. Over the past few years, the service has seen an increase in demand, both locally and internationally, making it an essential aspect of Friuli Venezia Giulia’s broader transportation network. The new contract will not only improve services for those traveling between Italy and its neighboring countries but also provide an economic boost by enhancing the region’s appeal as a tourist destination.
The tender is open for proposals from qualified maritime service providers, with bids due by 12:00 PM on February 4, 2025.
