In the heart of the Borgo San Sergio district, a neighborhood steeped in tradition, the newly refurbished “Mario Bussani” soccer field was inaugurated last week. The $750,000 project not only breathes new life into a vital community space but also honors the legacy of Mario Bussani, a beloved local coach and sports manager.
The ceremony drew city officials, sports leaders, and residents who came to celebrate the revitalization of the field, now elevated to first-category standards. Among those in attendance were Mayor Roberto Dipiazza, Councillor for Sports Policies Elisa Lodi, and Alex de Bosichi, president of Asd Trieste Victory Academy, which oversees the sports complex.
“I feel a personal connection to Borgo San Sergio,” Mayor Dipiazza said. “Inaugurating a facility that serves young people while acknowledging a long-standing sporting tradition adds great value to our city.”
The project, which faced delays due to technical challenges, was completed with significant upgrades, including a new artificial turf, improved drainage systems, and modernized irrigation and lighting. “This field represents inclusion and opportunity,” said Councillor Lodi. “Every child has the right to play in safe, high-quality facilities, and today we celebrate making that vision a reality.”
A Legacy Remembered
Mario Bussani’s name graces the field as a tribute to his decades of dedication to local sports. Known for his leadership and coaching, Bussani’s contributions to Trieste’s athletic community left an enduring mark.
The inauguration featured a ceremonial blessing of the field, adding a touch of tradition to the event. Residents applauded the investment, which they say will enrich the social fabric of the neighborhood and inspire the next generation of athletes.
A Technological Upgrade
The refurbishment required extensive work to address uneven field slopes, an issue uncovered during preliminary checks. Designers installed state-of-the-art synthetic turf, tailoring the surface for both durability and playability.
The project was funded through a $750,000 investment, with $530,000 allocated for construction. MAST Srl, a company based in northern Italy, won the contract with a bid 27% below the original estimate. The work was overseen by the city’s technical staff, ensuring adherence to the Italian Soccer Federation’s standards.
Looking Ahead
With the field now certified for official matches, its impact will be felt for years to come. “This field isn’t just about sports,” said Alex de Bosichi. “It’s about community, tradition, and creating opportunities for young people to grow.”
For the neighborhood of Borgo San Sergio, the “Mario Bussani” field stands as a testament to the city’s commitment to honoring its past while investing in its future.
