Italy’s public transportation system is bracing for significant disruptions as a national 24-hour strike has been called for Friday, December 13, by the grassroots union USB (Unione Sindacale di Base). The strike, which will impact local and regional transit networks, has drawn participation from USB’s regional secretariat in Friuli Venezia Giulia, raising concerns about disruptions in cities like Trieste.

The action is expected to affect a broad swath of transportation services, from bus operators and drivers to technical and administrative staff. While exact participation rates are unclear, past strikes have severely limited service in urban hubs, particularly during peak commuting hours.

In Trieste, where public transit is a lifeline for many, officials have announced that limited services will operate during designated times. Connections will be guaranteed between 6:00 and 9:00 a.m. and again from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., ensuring at least partial mobility for commuters. Outside these hours, however, disruptions are likely to cause delays and overcrowding.

The strike underscores ongoing tensions between transportation workers and government authorities over wages, working conditions, and systemic funding issues within the public transit sector. USB representatives have criticized what they describe as a lack of meaningful dialogue, prompting their decision to join the nationwide protest.

Commuters in Trieste and across Italy are advised to plan ahead and seek alternative modes of transportation where possible. Many are turning to cycling, carpooling, and remote work to navigate what promises to be a challenging day for travelers.
