As winter descends, the city of Trieste has mobilized its comprehensive Snow Plan, operational since December 1. This initiative, designed to manage severe weather conditions, unites municipal departments, local road operators, and public service agencies in a coordinated response.
The plan prioritizes key routes, including hospital access roads, public transport paths, and high-traffic areas. Preemptive salting begins ahead of snowfalls, followed by snowplow deployment when accumulation exceeds five centimeters.
“Managing snow is a collective effort,” said Councillor Caterina de Gavardo, emphasizing the collaboration of municipal and regional actors, including road management companies and social services.
Citizen Engagement: A Vital Role
Residents are integral to the plan’s success. By municipal decree, they must clear snow and ice from sidewalks adjacent to their properties. Additional recommendations include:
- Using coarse salt to prevent ice formation.
- Limiting vehicle use to avoid obstructing snowplows.
- Equipping cars with winter tires or chains and avoiding bicycles and scooters on icy roads.
The city also advises wearing anti-slip footwear to prevent accidents on frozen surfaces.
Information in Real Time
Under the hashtag #AllertameteoFVG, the city provides constant updates on road closures, school cancellations, and traffic disruptions through its official social media accounts.
Emergency contact numbers ensure swift responses to pressing needs:
- Emergency Services: 112
- Local Police Operations Center: +39 040.366.111
- AcegasApsAmga (Bins/Drains): 800.955.988
A Coordinated Response
Trieste’s Local Police Operations Center leads the emergency response, liaising with Civil Protection volunteers, road maintenance teams, and municipal departments to manage critical situations. Efforts include ensuring access to schools, hospitals, and care homes.
“Our agencies are ready,” de Gavardo noted, “but the community’s civic sense is crucial to maintaining safety and minimizing disruptions.”
With strategic planning and active citizen involvement, Trieste offers a model of winter readiness, blending foresight with community spirit to navigate the challenges of the season.
