In a landmark agreement that underscores the value of public transportation, the Friuli Venezia Giulia region has resolved a long-standing dispute with its local public transport companies. The agreement involves the allocation of approximately €47.7 million in funds, marking a pivotal step toward enhancing collaboration between regional authorities and transportation operators to better serve the public.

“This outcome represents a significant milestone in strengthening the partnership between regional institutions and the operators of the sector, ultimately benefiting our citizens,” said Cristina Amirante, the region’s Councillor for Infrastructure and Territory, in a statement released on Wednesday.

The dispute, which dates back to 2019, centered on the allocation of state funds earmarked for national contract renewals of public transport personnel between 2012 and 2020. The agreement resolves these longstanding financial disagreements and signals a renewed commitment to investing in the region’s public transit systems, which include Atap Pordenone, Trieste Trasporti, Apt Gorizia, and Arriva Udine.

To formalize the resolution, the regional government plans to incorporate the necessary regulatory framework into its 2025 Stability Law. These provisions will ensure that the funds are distributed as part of the region’s budgetary allocations, allowing for a long-term strategy to support the local public transport system.

A Sector of Strategic Importance

Amirante highlighted the critical role public transport plays in the region, describing it as “one of the pillars of regional policies.” Beyond providing essential services to citizens, the sector contributes to broader goals such as sustainability, safety, and quality employment. She underscored the administration’s commitment to valuing the professionalism of public transport workers and ensuring their well-being.

The agreement includes an additional extraordinary contribution of around €10 million to enhance worker benefits and improve the safety and quality of public transport services. “This is a clear message of appreciation for Tpl personnel and their professionalism,” Amirante stated.

Vision for the Future

The agreement is part of the region’s broader implementation of its 2023 Local Public Transport Plan. This ambitious plan includes integrating automotive and maritime services into a unified regional network, with a competitive tender process ensuring high-quality service provision.

“This accord demonstrates the region’s determination to meet the challenges of public transport through practical and collaborative measures,” Amirante noted. “Our goal is to deliver a reliable, safe, and sustainable service that meets the needs of the community while supporting those who work in this vital sector.”

The resolution is expected to solidify the region’s standing as a model for public transport innovation in Italy, setting the stage for further investments and advancements in mobility. For the residents of Friuli Venezia Giulia, it signals a brighter, more connected future—one bus, tram, and ferry ride at a time.
