Trieste is reimagining its historic Porto Vecchio, or Old Port, with the completion of the first section of the Monumental Boulevard—a cornerstone in the city’s ambitious revitalization project. This freshly painted and paved stretch marks a significant milestone in the transformation of the northernmost part of the port, an area steeped in industrial history now poised to become a hub for urban connectivity and green mobility.
The completed section includes a bike lane designed for high-speed cyclists, offering a direct route from the Barcola seafront to the city center along the boulevard. Meanwhile, casual cyclists and pedestrians will soon enjoy gentler paths through a new linear park, integrating lush landscapes with the port’s historic architecture.
However, the area remains temporarily closed due to ongoing work on the Maritime Museum within Warehouse 26 and preliminary efforts on the park. The port’s rejuvenation, supported by Italy’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), is on track for completion by 2026.
Future work will focus on extending the boulevard to Pier IV, where construction has faced delays due to water infiltration. Despite these challenges, the project is advancing ahead of schedule, with the first segment ready a year early.
Once finished, the Monumental Boulevard will redefine Porto Vecchio as a vibrant, accessible district bridging Trieste’s past and future, blending cultural heritage with modern urban design.
