A key milestone in the revitalization of Trieste’s historic Porto Vecchio area is set to take place on Tuesday, December 17, with the formal transfer of the “Former Post Office” building. The handover, which will be signed at the Prefecture, marks the transition of the building’s ownership from the Municipality of Trieste to the Regional Directorate of Friuli Venezia Giulia of the State Property Agency (Agenzia del Demanio).
The decision to transfer the property is a significant step in a broader plan to breathe new life into the Porto Vecchio district, a once-thriving port area that has long been in need of redevelopment. The building, which is located within this historic area, will soon become part of a larger initiative to repurpose state-owned properties for government use.
Following the transfer of ownership, the State Property Agency will assign the building to the Prefecture – U.T.G. of Trieste, which will then hand it over to the Carabinieri, Italy’s national police force. The building will house the Trieste-Porto Carabinieri Station, which is set to be reactivated as part of the government’s efforts to bolster security in the region.
The move is part of an ongoing collaboration aimed at revitalizing Porto Vecchio, with a focus on blending Trieste’s rich history with modern infrastructure. This operation aligns with the goals laid out in a “Memorandum of Understanding” signed on December 14, 2023. The agreement includes several key stakeholders, including the Prefecture – U.T.G. of Trieste, the Municipality of Trieste, the State Property Agency, the Carabinieri Legion, and the Port Authority of the Eastern Adriatic Sea for the Ports of Trieste and Monfalcone.
Local officials are hopeful that the reactivation of the Carabinieri station will serve as a catalyst for further investment and development in the area, paving the way for a more vibrant and secure Porto Vecchio in the years to come.
