The powerful Bora winds sweeping through Trieste this morning have brought dramatic disruptions, including the collapse of a streetlamp in the city’s historic Piazza Venezia and the suspension of ferry services to neighboring Muggia.
Firefighters were called to Piazza Venezia after the top portion of a lamp post gave way under the strain of the relentless gusts, crashing to the ground. Miraculously, no one was injured, as the area was deserted at the time of the incident.
This latest event highlights the unpredictable intensity of the Bora, a fierce wind unique to the region, which has been known to reach speeds that turn everyday objects into hazards.
In addition to the collapsed streetlamp, the Delfino Verde ferry service that links Trieste to the seaside town of Muggia was temporarily halted due to the extreme weather conditions.
Meteorologists have warned of sustained winds and strong gusts through the weekend. Today, the freezing level in the region is expected to rise significantly, from approximately 1,500 meters to 2,500 meters, bringing some relief to higher elevations.
Friday’s forecast predicts mostly clear skies, with moderate Bora winds persisting across the Karst plateau and the city. Strong gusts are expected overnight and into the early morning hours. By Saturday, the Bora is anticipated to ease slightly, blowing at light to moderate strength.
