On Thursday, January 2, at 5:00 PM, the Cathedral of Muggia will host the choir “Scherzi Armonici” in a concert titled Concert for the Magi. Directed by Giulia Fonzari, the performance marks the opening of a new concert season curated by the Serenade Ensemble Association.
The program promises a blend of Baroque masterpieces, European Christmas traditions, and Romantic-era compositions. Highlights include Telemann’s rare Suite for two horns and continuo, Gabrieli’s Sonata No. 1 for cello, and selected choral works: four parts of Schubert’s Deutsche Messe, Isaah’s Innsbruck ich muss dir lassen, Mendelssohn’s Hark the Herald Angels, and the traditional Noi semo i tre re.
Accompanying the choir will be Emanuele Golfetto on keyboard, horn players Luka Grego and Andrea Sfetez, and cellist Clara Di Giusto. Ms. Di Giusto, a recent graduate, is noted for her promise as a cello soloist, while Mr. Grego and Mr. Sfetez have earned recognition as frequent soloists with orchestras across Trieste and the Friuli Venezia Giulia region.
“Scherzi Armonici” is composed of singers who specialize in early music but occasionally venture into lighter genres. Under Ms. Fonzari’s leadership, the ensemble has performed at events such as the European Day of Early Music in Albona and at venues across Trieste and Muggia. The group collaborates with the regional “Eddie Cosina” project of the Wind Orchestra “City of Muggia.”
The Serenade Ensemble Association, chaired by Roberta Vlahov, aims to promote music to audiences of all ages. Ms. Vlahov emphasized the group’s commitment to community engagement, particularly during the holiday season. “Serenade Ensemble wants to be close to citizens year-round with our school and concerts,” she said. “During the holidays, we strive to bring a musical embrace to everyone.”
Admission to the concert is free. Additional information can be found on the Serenade Ensemble’s website or social media pages.
