The Municipality of Trieste has announced heightened security and new regulations ahead of the highly anticipated New Year’s Eve celebrations in Piazza Unità d’Italia. The event, featuring a live musical performance and traditional fireworks display, is expected to draw large crowds on the night of December 31, 2024, into January 1, 2025.
Under the new measures, revelers will be allowed to light pyrotechnic materials between 9:00 PM and 2:00 AM, with the notable exception of firecrackers, which remain banned for safety reasons. Access to the historic square will be tightly controlled, with entry permitted only through designated checkpoints at Via dell’Orologio, Passo Fratelli Fonda Savio, and two waterfront entry points flanking the square.
To ensure public safety, authorities have prohibited the introduction of glass or canned beverages, sharp objects such as umbrellas or selfie sticks, and other potentially hazardous items, including pepper spray. These restrictions will be in effect from 8:00 PM on December 31 until 2:30 AM on January 1.
Additionally, the consumption of alcoholic beverages will be strictly forbidden within the event area. Security personnel will conduct bag inspections at all entry points, confiscating any prohibited items. Inside Piazza Unità d’Italia, the use of any pyrotechnic materials is entirely banned.
The same rules apply to the surrounding areas during the event, extending the prohibition of glass and can containers, alcoholic beverages, and pyrotechnic materials.
City officials emphasized that the measures aim to balance the festive spirit of the evening with the safety and comfort of all attendees. Trieste’s Piazza Unità d’Italia, one of the largest waterfront squares in Europe, has long been a centerpiece of the city’s New Year’s celebrations, drawing both residents and international visitors.
With these regulations in place, the city hopes to ring in 2025 with joy, unity, and an enhanced sense of security.
