The historic Savoia Hotel will set the stage for the Seventh International Chess Tournament, a premier event co-organized by the Trieste Chess Academy and the Municipality of Trieste. Scheduled from January 4 to 6, the tournament promises to attract some of the finest minds in chess from across Europe and beyond.

The competition kicks off Saturday, January 4, at 3:30 PM in the Tergeste Room, with the ceremonial first move attended by Sports Councillor Elisa Lodi. Grandmasters from Italy, Serbia, Croatia, Austria, and Slovenia will headline the event, with past participants hailing from as far as Iran, Mexico, and Ukraine.

A European Chess Hub
Positioned at the crossroads of Central Europe, Trieste has become a vital nexus for the international chess community. Last year, the tournament drew 42 players, and this year’s edition builds on that success, underscoring Trieste’s growing stature in the chess world.

The Stakes
Players will compete for a €1,500 prize pool, divided into two categories:

  • Tournament A: “Hotel Savoia Trophy” for players rated above 1800 Elo
  • Tournament B: “Rozmann Memorial” for those rated below 1799

The event’s weekend format caters to competitors who combine their passion for chess with the opportunity to explore Trieste’s cultural and holiday offerings.

Details and Registration
Registration is open until January 3 at vesus.org, with limited on-site registration available on January 4.
