Italy’s premier winter trail running event, La Corsa Della Bora, is set to celebrate its tenth anniversary with a record-breaking surge in registrations. Known for its scenic routes through the Karst landscape of Friuli Venezia Giulia, this year’s event, scheduled for January 5, 2025, is anticipated to reach capacity months ahead of schedule, with participant numbers already double those of last year.
This year, La Corsa Della Bora, named after the Bora wind that sweeps across the region, aims to offer more than just a trail running experience, transforming the event into a celebration of both sport and local heritage. “For this special tenth anniversary, we want runners to feel part of something unique,” said Tommaso De’ Mottoni, president of Asd SentieroUno, the organizing body. “For the first time, every participant who registers by November 25 can have their name printed on their bib, creating a personalized experience that’s typically reserved for top-tier athletes.”
A standout feature of the 2025 event will be the addition of refreshment stops within local osmize—traditional inns unique to this region, where runners can sample local wines, cheeses, and other products. This touch of tradition reflects a larger effort by organizers to showcase the region’s culture and encourage participants from across Europe to engage deeply with the area’s heritage. “Our efforts to highlight the Karst landscape are paying off internationally,” De’ Mottoni said, noting a significant increase in participants from Croatia, Slovenia, and Germany. “Some clubs are sending groups of a hundred or more, marking a significant shift in the event’s international appeal.”
The 2025 race offers eight race distances, from family-friendly routes to demanding ultra-marathons. The most challenging, the 101-kilometer “Anniversary Run,” will test seasoned athletes on a route designed to explore the wild, rocky terrains for which the Karst region is known. For those seeking a less intense experience, new 5, 14, and 21-kilometer loops allow families and beginners to enjoy the trails and nature at their own pace. All routes will start and finish in the picturesque coastal village of Portopiccolo, eliminating the need for shuttles and providing a convenient loop for participants, along with bus service from nearby Trieste.
This year’s turnout and early interest defy the current trends of declining participation in competitive running events. “While many races are struggling, La Corsa Della Bora is thriving,” said De’ Mottoni. “We’ve become ambassadors of the Triestine Karst region, showcasing its beauty with new and immersive routes year after year.”
La Corsa Della Bora is supported by the Friuli Venezia Giulia region, Promoturismo, and other local partners, including the municipalities of Trieste, Duino Aurisina, San Dorligo della Valle, Sgonico, and Monrupino. Additional sponsorships and partnerships will be announced in the weeks ahead.
