Trieste’s local police have filed charges against three individuals accused of attempting to cheat during the theoretical driving exam at the city’s Civil Motorization Authority. The incident, which unfolded in mid-December, prompted the authorities to take immediate action after concerns were raised regarding the eligibility of several foreign candidates.

On December 11, plainclothes officers from the Judicial Police Unit of the Local Police infiltrated the Civil Motorization exam center ahead of the start of the computerized quiz-based test. With the assistance of technical equipment, the officers discovered that three Pakistani nationals were hiding smartphones equipped with micro-cameras, microphones, and mini-earpieces under their clothing. Investigators suspect that the individuals were in contact with an external party who was feeding them the answers during the exam. The devices were reportedly in video-call mode when the candidates entered the premises, likely intended to allow an external person to view the computer screen.

The three men, identified as N.S., 34, J.A.A., 25, and G.C.A.W., 40, were removed from the testing site and their exams were immediately halted. They have been formally reported to the Judicial Authority and face several charges, including the false attribution of others’ work in a bid to obtain a driving license, making false declarations in a public document, and providing false information to a public official about their identity or personal details.

Caterina de Gavardo, Trieste’s Councillor for Security, emphasized the ongoing collaboration between the Local Police and various external agencies. “The Local Police work closely with specialized units to address illegal activities and protect the safety and integrity of our city,” she said in a statement.

Authorities have pledged to continue monitoring and conducting preventive checks to deter similar incidents in the future.
