Culture lovers visiting Trieste will have a reason to celebrate on January 5, 2025, as the city’s Civic Museums open their doors for free as part of the nationwide Sunday at the Museum initiative. Sponsored by Italy’s Ministry of Culture, the program offers complimentary entry to cultural landmarks across the country on the first Sunday of every month.

In Trieste, the initiative includes some of the city’s most notable museums that typically charge admission. Among them is the Revoltella Museum, a cornerstone of modern art in the region, which is set to fully reopen in spring 2025. For now, visitors can explore its historic baronial residence free of charge.

Other participating institutions include the majestic San Giusto Castle, the Carlo Schmidl Theater Museum, the Diego de Henriquez War for Peace Museum, and the Natural History Museum, home to fascinating collections that trace the region’s rich natural and cultural heritage.

Year-round, Trieste also offers free access to several other cultural gems. These include the Maritime Museum, the Museum of Oriental Art, the Sartorio Museum, the J.J. Winckelmann Museum of Antiquities, and the Risiera di San Sabba, a haunting reminder of the city’s history during World War II. Visitors can also explore the Documentation Center of the Foiba di Basovizza and the Museum of the Risorgimento and Oberdan Memorial. Additionally, temporary exhibitions at Warehouse 26 are included in the initiative.

However, not all exhibitions are part of the program. Major shows at the Salone degli Incanti and certain temporary exhibits with separate entry fees are excluded.

For more details on the museums, their collections, and opening hours, visitors are encouraged to check individual museum websites or visit TriesteCultura.

With its eclectic mix of art, history, and heritage, Trieste’s Civic Museums offer an unparalleled opportunity to explore the cultural richness of this Adriatic gem—for free.
