At noon today, the Adriatic Sea became the stage for one of Trieste’s most cherished traditions, as a wooden cross was launched into the water during the Greek Orthodox Epiphany celebration.

Under overcast skies and a chilly 7 degrees Celsius, the priest of the Church of San Nicolò dei Greci presided over the Blessing of the Waters at Molo Audace, an event that draws the faithful and curious onlookers alike. After a solemn invocation of the Holy Spirit to sanctify the waters, the priest raised the cross high and cast it into the sea, a moment met with reverent silence and palpable anticipation.

Within seconds, a group of volunteers plunged into the icy water, racing to retrieve the sacred symbol. The spectators erupted into cheers, their breath visible in the cold January air, as the swimmers competed to claim the honor of returning the cross to the clergy.

A Test of Faith and Courage

The act of diving for the cross is more than just a physical challenge. For the participants, it is a demonstration of faith and devotion, a personal offering to their community and their beliefs. Months of preparation, both mental and physical, go into this singular moment.

“Every year, this ceremony reminds us of the strength and commitment our faith requires,” said the presiding Archimandrite, reflecting on the significance of the ritual.

The Blessing of the Waters, which commemorates the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan, is one of the most sacred moments in the Greek Orthodox calendar. The ritual symbolizes the renewal of spiritual grace and serves as a poignant reminder of the connection between the faithful and their Creator.

A Timeless Tradition

The morning’s events began at the Church of San Nicolò dei Greci, where the Pontifical Divine Liturgy was celebrated. Following the service, a solemn procession made its way through the city streets to the waterfront, where the blessing and the iconic cross-launching unfolded.

Despite the frigid conditions, the crowd remained captivated as the swimmers braved the cold waters, their determination reflecting the enduring strength of this centuries-old tradition.

The first volunteer to recover the cross emerged from the sea to applause and blessings, a symbol of faith rewarded and community celebrated. The Archbishop offered prayers and a special blessing for those who participated, underscoring the significance of their act.

A Celebration of Community

The Epiphany tradition in Trieste is more than a religious ritual; it is a communal event that binds generations together. For the city, which has long been a cultural crossroads, the celebration highlights the enduring presence and influence of its Greek Orthodox community.

As the crowd slowly dispersed, the faithful returned to the Church of San Nicolò dei Greci for the concluding rites of the day. By early afternoon, the Adriatic had returned to its tranquil state, but the memory of the morning’s powerful display of devotion lingered, a testament to the city’s vibrant heritage and the resilience of faith.
