For the first time, the original Broadway production of the acclaimed musical Come From Away will land in continental Europe, with exclusive performances at the Politeama Rossetti from January 10 to 12, 2025.
Praised as “one of the best musicals of the century” by The Times, Come From Away tells the remarkable true story of Gander, Newfoundland. On September 11, 2001, 38 planes carrying 7,000 passengers from around the world were diverted to the tiny Canadian town after U.S. airspace was closed. Despite the overwhelming situation, Gander’s 10,000 residents responded with unparalleled hospitality, creating bonds that have lasted decades.
Written by Irene Sankoff and David Hein, and directed by Tony Award winner Christopher Ashley, the musical debuted on Broadway in 2017 and has since won multiple awards, including a Tony for Best Direction and four Olivier Awards in London. Its evocative score, inspired by Newfoundland’s Celtic and folk-rock traditions, and its minimalist staging have captivated audiences globally.
Trieste’s production will feature the original Broadway and West End staging, performed by a seasoned UK touring cast. Among them is Sarah Poyzer, known to local audiences for her role as Donna Sheridan in the international tour of Mamma Mia! in 2015.

A Story of Humanity Amid Tragedy
The musical draws on real-life accounts from Gander residents and passengers, whom the authors interviewed during a 10th-anniversary reunion. The result is a powerful narrative of hope and connection, where characters—ranging from an Italian Alitalia pilot to the first female captain of American Airlines—find common ground in the midst of chaos.
Come From Away will also be complemented by a free pre-show talk on January 9, hosted by Peter Brown of the British School, exploring the history behind this extraordinary story.
