A 3.9 magnitude earthquake struck Friuli Venezia Giulia on Sunday afternoon, shaking communities near the town of Raveo, about 2 kilometers west-southwest of the epicenter.

The quake, recorded shortly before 3 p.m. local time, occurred at a depth of six kilometers, according to the region’s Civil Protection Agency.

The tremor marked the second seismic event in the area this week. In the early hours of Wednesday, January 10, a 3.6 magnitude earthquake was registered at 2:42 a.m. near the town of Ampezzo, less than 10 kilometers from Friday’s epicenter.

Residents in the region, known for its proximity to the Italian Alps and occasional seismic activity, reported feeling the tremors, though no immediate reports of damage or injuries were made.

Northern Italy, particularly Friuli Venezia Giulia, has experienced devastating earthquakes in the past, including a catastrophic 6.5 magnitude quake in 1976 that caused widespread destruction. While these recent quakes were of significantly lower magnitude, they serve as a reminder of the region’s geological vulnerabilities.

Local authorities continue to monitor the situation, emphasizing preparedness measures for communities in the seismically active zone.
