As the Lloyd section of the Museum of the Sea undergoes refurbishment, the museum is hosting a series of lectures highlighting the pivotal role of the Austrian Lloyd shipping company in shaping the history of Trieste and the Mediterranean.

On Thursday, January 16, at 5:30 PM, Dr. Matteo Barbano, a researcher affiliated with the University of Genoa and the Institute for Mediterranean Studies in Rethymno, will deliver a lecture titled “The Austrian Lloyd and Mass Mobility in the Greater Mediterranean During the Age of Steam.” The event will take place in the museum’s educational space, located in Warehouse 26.

Dr. Barbano’s presentation will examine how Austrian Lloyd contributed to the transformation of mass mobility in the Mediterranean during the 19th century and its role in the economic systems that emerged with the advent of steam-powered technology. The lecture forms part of the research initiative Mediterranean Mass Mobilities and Displacements in the Age of Steam (1869–1914), supported by the Maria Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship.

The ongoing refurbishment of the Lloyd section is part of a broader initiative funded by the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region to support public and private museums through projects focused on maintenance, restoration, expansion, and modernization. The funding aligns with provisions of the 2024 Stability Law, enacted in late 2023.

Attendance at the lecture is free, with a maximum of 25 participants permitted. Reservations can be made by contacting the museum at museomare@comune.trieste.it.
