by InTrieste
An ambitious art exhibition titled WASTED opens in Trieste on January 18, 2025, and in Gradisca d’Isonzo on February 1, offering a critical examination of the intersections between gender inequality and the misuse of natural resources. Featuring works by international contemporary artists, the exhibition addresses themes of marginalization, environmental concerns, and societal stereotypes.
Organized by the Municipality of Gradisca d’Isonzo in collaboration with Trieste and the cultural organization IoDeposito ETS, the initiative is supported by Friuli Venezia Giulia Region. The event marks a continuation of Gradisca d’Isonzo’s rise as a cultural hub in northeastern Italy, with venues like the Luigi Spazzapan Regional Gallery and Casa Maccari at the forefront of the region’s contemporary art scene.
A Multilayered Artistic Approach
The exhibition unfolds across four thematic chapters, examining the following:
- The devaluation of female knowledge, with installations exploring the historic and natural connections of women’s contributions.
- The “male gaze” in art and media, and its impact on perceptions of women’s bodies.
- Barriers to women’s presence in public spaces, illustrated through works addressing social and cultural restrictions.
- The intersection of colonialism and gender, highlighted by performance art that reflects on race and historical trauma.
Live Performances and Public Engagement
A highlight of the Trieste exhibition will be a live performance on January 30 by Franco-Ivorian artist Abigaïl Sia. Beginning with a symbolic walking piece from Sala Veruda, the performance incorporates elements of activism, poetry, and visual transformation to address gender and racial violence.
The exhibition also features workshops and guided tours, many tailored for educators, students, and cultural professionals, with a focus on engaging younger audiences.
