Residents of Trieste were met with an unusual sight early Wednesday morning when part of the road surface lifted on Via Pascoli during the night between January 14 and 15.

Emergency services, including the local fire brigade and municipal police, acted swiftly to contain the situation. The affected section of Via Pascoli, where it intersects with Via Piccardi, was promptly closed to traffic to ensure public safety.
In a coordinated response, Acegas, the local utility company, temporarily suspended the water supply in the area as a precautionary measure.
As of Wednesday afternoon, the cause of the disruption to the road remains undetermined. Officials are investigating the incident, with local authorities speculating that it could be related to underground infrastructure or other environmental factors.
The event has raised concerns among residents, who are accustomed to the smooth operation of public infrastructure in the city. “It’s unsettling to see something like this happen,” said one local passerby. “We hope the authorities find out what caused it and take steps to prevent it from happening again.”
This incident comes as Trieste experiences unseasonably mild winter weather, which some experts suggest may contribute to shifts in underground conditions. However, no official cause has yet been confirmed.
City officials assured the public that they are working to address the situation and minimize disruptions to the daily lives of residents and commuters.
