In an effort to address public safety concerns and enhance the perception of security, officials in Trieste have announced the implementation of “red zones” in several key areas. The decision was reached during a meeting of the Provincial Committee for Public Order and Safety on Thursday and will remain in effect until the end of March.
The initiative is part of a broader strategy introduced by Italy’s Interior Minister, Matteo Piantedosi, which grants local Prefectures the authority to designate areas particularly vulnerable to crime for enhanced security measures.
Targeted Areas
The designated red zones encompass several prominent locations in Trieste, including the streets surrounding Piazza Perugino and stretching to Piazza Goldoni, the area from Piazza della Libertà to Piazza Oberdan, Piazza Verdi and Molo Audace, as well as sections of Via Carducci and Viale XX Settembre.
According to Prefect Pietro Signoriello, the red zones will focus on curbing criminal activities and ensuring a stronger presence of law enforcement. “These measures aim to reassure residents and visitors while strengthening territorial control,” he said.
How the Red Zones Will Work
Individuals with criminal records or those flagged by authorities will be prohibited from loitering or passing through these zones. The specifics of the regulations are expected to be finalized in the coming hours, with enforcement likely to begin as early as this weekend.
The plan also includes a permanent presence of law enforcement and military personnel in the most critical areas. Additionally, officials are considering municipal ordinances for some zones to restrict the operation of establishments selling food and beverages and to limit the circulation of glass bottles and cans.
