The picturesque town of Gorizia played host to an impressive showcase of academic opportunity this week, as the University of Trieste welcomed over 400 high school seniors to its annual orientation event, “Open Doors.” Designed to introduce prospective students to the university’s Gorizia branch, the event highlighted four degree programs whose popularity is steadily growing.

This year’s attendance marks a 15% increase from 2024, a surge that reflects heightened interest in the campus’s offerings. The programs featured include a five-year single-cycle master’s degree in Architecture and three three-year bachelor’s degrees: International and Diplomatic Sciences, Healthcare Assistance, and Prevention Techniques in the Environment and Workplace.

The Aula Magna of the Gorizia campus, located on Via Alviano, buzzed with activity as students from across Friuli Venezia Giulia and beyond explored the possibilities of their academic futures. The event provided a rare respite from the grind of exam preparation for many attendees, who took the opportunity to engage with faculty, tour state-of-the-art laboratories, and gather essential details about student life. Topics ranged from enrollment procedures and financial aid to scholarships and housing options.

While most participants hailed from Friuli Venezia Giulia, more than 60 made the journey from other regions, including Veneto, Lombardy, and even farther-flung locales such as Ancona, Lecce, and Syracuse. The diversity of the attendees underscored the broad appeal of Gorizia’s programs, which have seen a significant boost in enrollment in recent years. Currently, 632 students are enrolled in the four programs, with 20% coming from outside the region.

The university’s expansion into healthcare-related fields, including degree programs in Healthcare Assistance and Prevention Techniques, has particularly bolstered interest. These additions align with a broader trend of academic institutions adapting to meet the evolving needs of both students and the job market.

For many of the high school seniors in attendance, the day offered more than just information; it served as an inspiring glimpse into the next chapter of their academic journeys. As Italy continues to prioritize education and workforce development, the University of Trieste’s Gorizia campus stands as a vital player in shaping the future of its students—and the region.
