Italian actress Isabella Rossellini has earned a coveted Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Edward Berger’s Conclave, the Academy announced on Thursday.
Rossellini, 72, portrays Sister Agnes in the film adaptation of Robert Harris’s novel, which unfolds in the Vatican during a dramatic papal conclave as cardinals convene to elect a new pope. Her portrayal has garnered widespread acclaim for its depth and nuance.
Born into cinematic royalty as the daughter of Swedish actress Ingrid Bergman and Italian director Roberto Rossellini, Isabella Rossellini initially made her mark as a model before transitioning to acting in the 1980s. Over her storied career, she has delivered memorable performances in films such as Blue Velvet, Death Becomes Her, and Big Night.
Rossellini faces stiff competition in the Best Supporting Actress category, which also includes Zoe Saldana (Emilia Perez), Monica Barbaro (A Complete Unknown), Ariana Grande (Wicked), and Felicity Jones (The Brutalist).
While Rossellini’s nomination is cause for celebration, Italy faced disappointment as its official submission for Best International Feature Film, Maura Delpero’s wartime drama Vermiglio, did not make the shortlist.
The 2025 Oscars ceremony is set to take place on March 2 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, promising a night of glamour and celebration of cinematic achievements.
