On a winter morning in Trieste, maritime history enthusiasts are in for a treat. The city’s renowned Museum of the Sea will host a special guided tour of its latest exhibition, “Elettra-Rovenska: Memories from Marconi’s Yacht.” Taking place at 11:00 AM on Saturday, January 25, the event promises an in-depth exploration of one of the most fascinating chapters in scientific and nautical history.
Curator Andrea Bonifacio, a leading expert in maritime artifacts, will personally guide attendees through the exhibit. The centerpiece of the tour is the legendary yacht Elettra, which served as the floating laboratory for Guglielmo Marconi, the Italian inventor celebrated for his pioneering work in wireless communication. Bonifacio will narrate the storied journey of the Elettra through rare artifacts from the Museum’s collection, shedding light on how this vessel became a vessel of discovery.
Adding a contemporary dimension to the exhibit, the tour will also feature a presentation of a stunning photographic campaign by artist Primož Bizjak. The campaign captures fragments of the Elettra’s hull, which are now dispersed among various scientific institutions. These evocative images not only preserve the yacht’s legacy but also highlight its enduring significance to the fields of science and innovation.
Attendance is limited to 25 participants, ensuring an intimate and engaging experience. Those interested are encouraged to act swiftly, as reservations are required by 12:00 PM on Friday, January 10, 2025. To secure a spot, email the Museum of the Sea at museomare@comune.trieste.it.
The Elettra was more than just a yacht; it was a vessel of dreams that carried Marconi’s groundbreaking experiments across the waves. This guided tour offers an extraordinary opportunity to revisit this chapter of history, blending art, science, and maritime heritage in the heart of Trieste.
