A nationwide train strike is set to disrupt travel across Italy this weekend, with service interruptions expected from 9 p.m. on Saturday, January 25, to 9 p.m. on Sunday, January 26. Organized by the SGC, CUB, and USB unions, the strike is likely to affect both regional and long-distance rail services, including those operated by the state-owned Trenitalia and private companies such as Italo and Trenord.

Travelers heading to and from Rome’s Fiumicino Airport, one of the country’s busiest travel hubs, may also experience significant delays or cancellations. With the strike falling over the weekend, the usual weekday regulations that guarantee train service during peak hours will not apply.

Union representatives have pointed to longstanding grievances over working conditions, calling for better contracts and enhanced protections for employees in railway maintenance.

The strike comes amid heightened scrutiny of Italy’s railway system following two high-profile incidents. In Padua, passengers were evacuated from a regional train due to a technical fault, while in Rome, commuters faced major delays after an act of suspected sabotage. Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Matteo Salvini has recently addressed these concerns in Parliament, warning of possible deliberate disruptions to the rail network.

For official updates and information about affected services, travelers are advised to consult Italy’s Ministry of Transportwebsite or the Trenitalia customer service page.
