A new scholarship program aims to support medical research on amyloidosis, a rare and underdiagnosed disease, by recognizing academic excellence and fostering specialization in the field. The initiative, funded through a regional employee-led fundraising effort, was announced by Pierpaolo Roberti, Regional Councilor for Local Autonomies, at a presentation in Trieste.

The scholarship will award the top graduate from the University of Trieste’s Master’s Degree Program in Medicine and Surgery who has completed a thesis in Hematology or Cardiology and commits to further studies in early amyloidosis diagnostics. The disease, which is rare and poorly understood, has its leading Italian research center at the San Matteo Polyclinic in Pavia.

Roberti highlighted the significant challenges faced by patients and families dealing with rare diseases, which are often invisible and difficult to diagnose, emphasizing the need for equal attention and research resources compared to more common conditions. He also thanked the University of Trieste and the Giuliano Isontina University Health Authority for their collaboration on the project.

“The Region is committed to supporting this scholarship in the future so that young doctors can pursue specialization in a field requiring dedication, passion, and innovation,” Roberti said.

Applications for the scholarship close on April 3.
