Italy marks International Holocaust Remembrance Day on Friday with hundreds of commemorative events on the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau extermination camp.

Established by the United Nations to commemorate the day in 1945 that the survivors of Auschwitz were liberated, the initiative honours the memory of the millions of Jews – but also homosexuals, Romany people and others – who suffered persecution, deportation, imprisonment and genocide.

The Comune di Trieste marks the Giorno della Memoria by the yearly ceremony at Risiera di San Saba at 11 am, which will be transmitted live on the comune’s social media channels.
