Work is set to begin Monday, February 7, on the rehabilitation of the water pipeline beneath the Sandrinelli Tunnel, which connects Piazza Sansovino and Piazza Goldoni. The project, led by the utility company AcegasApsAmga, aims to upgrade the city’s water network as part of a broader initiative funded by Italy’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR).

The project will replace the aging pipeline beneath the tunnel using a technique known as “relining,” where a new pipe is inserted into the existing one. The plan follows extensive surveys carried out in January, which mapped the precise path of the current infrastructure.

The work will be carried out in two phases.

Phase 1: February 7–28

During the first phase, the Sandrinelli Tunnel will be closed to vehicular traffic from Friday, February 7, at 8:30 a.m. until midnight on Friday, February 28. The closure will also affect nearby streets:

  • Piazza del Sansovino (between Via Madonnina and the Sandrinelli Tunnel)
  • Via Silvio Pellico (between Corso Italia/Piazza Goldoni and the Sandrinelli Tunnel)

Public transportation will be allowed to pass through the tunnel under a single-lane alternating traffic system.

Phase 2: March 1–16

The second phase will address the intersection of Piazza Sansovino, Via Madonnina, and Via Bernini. This stage will involve final hydraulic adjustments to activate the new pipeline. Lane reductions will be in effect near the excavation site in Piazza Sansovino, but no road closures are expected.

The project is part of ongoing efforts to modernize the city’s water infrastructure and improve service reliability. Residents and commuters are advised to plan accordingly to minimize disruptions.

AcegasApsAmga has apologized for any inconvenience caused and assured the public that efforts will be made to complete the work efficiently.
