Two of Italy’s most historic sailing hubs, Trieste and Monfalcone, are set to host a series of major regattas in 2025, cementing their status as premier destinations for international competitive sailing. Over the course of a month, three back-to-back events will bring world-class offshore and one-design racing to the northern Adriatic, drawing elite sailors and spectators alike.
The season will open in Trieste from August 25 to 30 with the 2025 ORC Double Handed Italian Championship, organized by the storied Triestina della Vela club. The event will feature two offshore races of 35 and 80 nautical miles, determining Italy’s offshore champion for two-person crews.
A week later, the competition shifts to Monfalcone, where from September 7 to 13, the city will host the ORC Double Handed World Championship for the first time. Organized by Yacht Club Monfalcone, the event marks Italy’s debut as a host for this prestigious offshore sailing competition. The race will serve as a crucial test for the Double Handed (DH) class, which is being considered for inclusion in the 2032 Brisbane Olympics.
The third and final event will return to Trieste for the 2025 Melges 24 World Championship, running from September 19 to 27 and organized by Yacht Club Adriaco, the oldest yacht club in the Adriatic. This will be the first time the Melges 24 Worlds take place in the Adriatic, following the 2024 edition in San Francisco.

“This is an unprecedented season for our region, showcasing the deep sailing tradition of Trieste and Monfalcone,” said Pierpaolo Roberti, Regional Councillor for Local Autonomies. “We are proud to welcome the world’s top sailors and celebrate our region’s place in international yachting.”
Monfalcone, historically a hub for shipbuilding, has seen a resurgence in sailing investment in recent years, attracting top-tier regattas and positioning itself as a key player in the sport. Anna Maria Cisint, former mayor of Monfalcone, emphasized the city’s growing role, stating, “We are ready to welcome athletes from around the world for a season of great sport and great sailing.”
For Trieste, a city with a deep-rooted connection to the sea, securing the Melges 24 Worlds was a competitive process that saw it prevail over several top sailing destinations. “Hosting this event is the result of years of work,” said Nicolò de Manzini, president of Yacht Club Adriaco. “It highlights the strong collaboration between local yacht clubs and our shared commitment to growing the sport.”
The economic impact of these events is expected to be significant, with thousands of visitors bringing a boost to the local economy. Organizers say the synergy between the clubs and institutions has been instrumental in securing these high-profile championships, ensuring that 2025 will be a defining year for sailing in the northern Adriatic.
