Ahead of Nova Gorica-Gorizia European Capital of Culture 2025, regional officials have announced new transportation initiatives to improve access to the cross-border event.

Starting February 8, expanded rail and bus services will connect the cities of Gorizia and Nova Gorica, located on the Italian-Slovenian border, with other parts of the Friuli Venezia Giulia region and beyond. The initiative, led by the regional government, aims to facilitate travel in a sustainable manner.

Among the highlights is the return of the ETR 252 Arlecchino, a historic 1960s train, which will transport passengers to Gorizia on the event’s opening day. The train, restored by the Italian railway foundation Fondazione FS, will run special routes from Venice, Trieste, and Udine.

Additional direct rail connections between Venice Mestre and Gorizia/Nova Gorica will operate on weekends and holidays through the end of the year. The service, run by Trenitalia, will use new Blues trains, marking the restoration of a long-discontinued direct line between Venice and the border cities.

New cross-border bus services will also be introduced, including a daily route linking Gorizia and Nova Gorica, as well as an urban line connecting Slovenia to Italy. Trieste Airport, a key regional transport hub, will serve as a connection point for travelers using public transit.

Regional Councilor for Infrastructure and Territory Cristina Amirante described the plan as a collaborative effort with multiple transit operators to ensure accessibility for visitors. “We have strengthened transport options to make this event more accessible and sustainable,” she said.

Tickets for the new rail services are available through Trenitalia, with some routes subject to temporary diversions due to scheduled maintenance.
