A new roundabout designed to improve road safety and traffic flow in Sgonico was officially inaugurated today, thanks to a 600,000 euro investment from the Friuli Venezia Giulia regional government. The roundabout, located near the Lanza Center, is expected to alleviate traffic congestion and reduce accidents on a key stretch connecting to the highway, a route frequently used by both passenger vehicles and heavy trucks.

Regional Councillor for Infrastructure and Territory, Cristina Amirante, who attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony, emphasized the importance of the project in improving safety. “This intervention addresses a critical intersection, increasing safety on a busy route, and is set to significantly reduce accident rates while making travel more efficient for commuters,” she stated.

The project involved the overhaul of an existing intersection that had become inadequate due to increased traffic volumes. Situated between km 8+900, where the Sgonico exit is located, and km 11, at the Prosecco exit, this stretch of road is a primary route connecting to the Monfalcone highway junction. The construction was completed ahead of schedule, with work concluding on December 20, 40 days earlier than planned, and with a savings of around 80,000 euros.

The savings have been reinvested into additional improvements, including enhanced road signage and the installation of two surveillance cameras to monitor the industrial area nearby.

Amirante, who also thanked the regional decentralization entity (Edr) and the contractor involved in the project, stressed that the roundabout’s design would help reduce speed, thereby lowering the likelihood of accidents in the area.

The inauguration was attended by several local dignitaries, including Sgonico Mayor Monica Hrovatin and Roberta Clericuzio, the General Director of the Edr of Trieste.

This latest infrastructure project reflects the region’s ongoing efforts to improve road safety and manage increasing traffic volumes on key routes, ensuring a safer and more efficient commute for residents and visitors alike.
