City officials have unveiled plans for the redevelopment of Piazza Sant’Antonio Nuovo, a key public space in the heart of Trieste. The project, which includes improvements to surrounding streets and the central garden, aims to enhance accessibility while preserving the square’s historic character.

Deputy Mayor Serena Tonel, along with municipal councilors Michele Babuder and Elisa Lodi, presented the initiative on Friday. The plan, they said, builds on previous infrastructure upgrades, including the modernization of underground utilities.

“The city is committed to revitalizing this important space while respecting its historical significance,” said Babuder. Work has already begun on Via Paganini and Via Ponchielli, with completion expected by late spring.

The broader redevelopment, estimated at €3.8 million, will be carried out in phases. The first, currently funded at €1 million, focuses on the streets adjacent to the Church of Sant’Antonio. A second phase, pending additional financing, would restore the churchyard, the garden, and the fountain.

Officials emphasized efforts to minimize disruptions for local businesses, particularly during peak shopping seasons. “We appreciate the flexibility of the construction team in accommodating commercial activity,” said Tonel.

The project follows a “conservative redevelopment” approach, informed by historical research and public input. Plans include unifying street levels for improved accessibility, restoring original stone patterns, and maintaining green spaces.

Trieste has invested in several public square renovations in recent years, including a similar effort in Piazza Goldoni. The city sees these projects as a way to balance modernization with historic preservation.
