The Amerigo Vespucci, often hailed as “the most beautiful ship in the world,” will make its long-awaited return to Italy next month, greeted by a grand maritime spectacle in the Gulf of Trieste.

On March 1, a Boat Parade organized by Barcolana—the world’s largest regatta—will see an array of vessels escort the historic Italian navy training ship into port. The event, held in collaboration with local sailing, rowing, and sport fishing clubs, will include sailboats, motorboats, kayaks, and stand-up paddleboards.

The parade marks the first Italian stop for the Vespucci after a two-year circumnavigation as part of its 2023-2025 World Tour, an initiative backed by Italy’s Ministry of Defense to showcase Italian naval diplomacy and craftsmanship worldwide.

“This is a historic moment for Trieste,” said Mitja Gialuz, president of Barcolana’s organizing committee. “In 2018, the Vespucci honored our regatta’s 50th anniversary, and now we have the chance to return the tribute as it re-enters Italian waters.”

The procession will follow two routes: motorized vessels will depart from Barcola at 1:00 p.m., sailing at a steady 4 knots toward the Vespucci in the center of the Gulf before following it into the city’s San Giusto Basin. Non-motorized craft, including rowboats and SUPs, will set off at 2:00 p.m. from the Porto Vecchio breakwater, joining the historic ship near its final docking point.

Participation is free, with registration opening on February 10 at specialedition.barcolana.it. Participants will receive event memorabilia, including a Gran Pavese flag for their vessels. A special recognition will be awarded to the largest participating sports club and to the most creatively costumed crew, as the event coincides with Carnival weekend.

The Vespucci’s Mediterranean tour will continue through June 2025, culminating in Genoa for the Italian Navy Day celebrations.
