With less than a month remaining until the Muggia Carnival begins, local authorities have outlined a series of security measures aimed at ensuring a safe environment for festival-goers. The town’s annual celebration, which draws large crowds, has prompted several recent meetings between the Municipality and the Prefecture to finalize safety protocols.

Following recommendations from the Public Order Committee and in response to recent incidents in Trieste, Muggia has introduced adjustments to operating hours and the sale of alcohol during the Carnival. While these measures are less restrictive than those imposed in some parts of Trieste, outdoor seating areas and event booths will close at the same time as outdoor music, at 12:30 AM, in keeping with last year’s schedule. The sale of alcoholic beverages will be permitted until 1:00 AM, as stipulated by the Prefecture. Music inside venues and the sale of non-alcoholic drinks will end at 1:30 AM, with all establishments required to close by 2:00 AM.

The new ordinance, which will take effect during the Carnival, applies to the area stretching from Piazzale Alto Adriatico to Porto San Rocco, including the town’s historic center.

As in previous years, access to Piazza Marconi will be restricted on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings during Carnival week. This will help manage crowds, with a cap on the number of people allowed to enter starting at 7:00 PM. The measure, first introduced two years ago during the parade awards ceremony, is part of broader efforts to maintain public order during large events.

For the first time, the Municipality will offer two areas for live music: Piazza Marconi and Piazza della Repubblica, with approximately 40 security personnel deployed each evening. On high-traffic nights, such as Friday, Saturday, and Tuesday, the number of security staff will increase to 60.

In addition to enhanced crowd management, emergency medical services will be bolstered. An ambulance will be stationed in Muggia, with extended hours on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. A dedicated ambulance will be available daily from 7:00 PM to 3:00 AM.

On Sunday, March 2 — expected to be the busiest day — 68 security personnel will be on duty, alongside law enforcement officers and volunteers. Additional details regarding transportation services provided by Trieste Trasporti will be announced in the coming days.

Muggia’s mayor, Paolo Polidori, emphasized the importance of balancing fun and safety. “Having fun safely is the key message of the Carnival,” he said. “The decisions made by the administration, such as eliminating the Carnival tent, have returned this festival to its original spirit, catering to those who seek wholesome fun.”

Deputy Mayor Nicola Delconte echoed these sentiments, stressing the importance of responsible behavior. “Our priority is ensuring a safe environment for everyone,” Delconte said. “We ask that visitors respect the rules and come to celebrate in good spirits. Those with different intentions are better off staying home.”

With these measures in place, the Municipality of Muggia aims to ensure that the 2025 Carnival is both a celebration and a safe event for the community.
